Tungsten Balls & Spheres

Tungsten Parts Wyoming manufactures precision tungsten balls and spheres in pure and heavy-alloy grades, from 1.0 mm to 127 mm, machined powder-to-part in Laramie, Wyoming. At up to 19.3 g/cc, tungsten delivers maximum mass in a compact sphere for ballast, bearings, and high-density applications.

Why Tungsten Balls & Spheres from TPW?

When an application demands maximum density and tight geometric tolerance in a small sphere, tungsten outperforms steel, lead, and ceramic alternatives:

  • Maximum Density in Compact Form: High-density tungsten delivers more mass per sphere than steel or ceramic, ideal for ballast, calibration, and radiation applications.
  • Precision Sphericity & Tolerance: Precision-ground balls held to tight diameter and roundness specifications for demanding instrument and imaging work.
  • Wide Diameter Range: Available from 1.0 mm to 127 mm in pure and heavy-alloy grades to match your application.
  • US-Manufactured & Certified: Produced in Laramie, Wyoming with Certificate of Conformance and full lot traceability.

What TPW Makes in Tungsten Balls & Spheres

Precision spheres, built to your specification and delivered with full documentation:

  • Available in alloy grades from 17.0 to 18.8 g/cm³ per ASTM B777 / AMS7725F
  • Certificate of Conformance (C of C) on every order; full lot traceability
  • First-article inspection with dimensional and weight verification
  • AS9100D and ISO 9001 certified; ITAR-registered; DFARS-compliant; Made in USA

Precision Tungsten Spheres

Tungsten spheres are precision-ground balls built for work where high density and tight geometric tolerance matter most: calibration and metrology, CT phantom and dosimetry markers, scientific instrumentation, and high-density ballast. At up to 19.3 g/cc, a tungsten sphere carries more than twice the mass of a steel sphere of the same diameter, so it delivers the reference weight or radiation attenuation you need in a smaller, more stable footprint.

We grind spheres in pure tungsten and tungsten heavy alloy (W-Ni-Fe and W-Ni-Cu) to ASTM B777, from 1.0 mm to 127 mm, across more than 50 catalog sizes plus custom diameters made to your drawing. Each sphere holds consistent diameter, sphericity, and surface finish across the lot, and ships with a Certificate of Conformance and full dimensional verification.

Every tungsten ball and sphere order ships with a Certificate of Conformance and dimensional verification. Direct coordination with our Laramie, Wyoming facility. Request a quote with your diameters, grades, and quantities.

Tungsten Ball & Sphere Size and Weight

DiameterApprox. weight, each (pure W, 19.25 g/cc)
1/8 in (3.18 mm)~0.3 g
1/4 in (6.35 mm)~2.6 g
1/2 in (12.7 mm)~21 g
3/4 in (19.05 mm)~70 g
1 in (25.4 mm)~165 g

Weights are nominal for pure tungsten; tungsten heavy alloy balls run slightly lower by density. Custom diameters available.

Industrial & Defense Tungsten Spheres

Tungsten balls and spheres serve as fragments for munitions and warhead programs, counterweights and ballast in aerospace, and density-reference and bearing applications. A tungsten ball has a ground surface with tight tolerances; a tungsten sphere is a sintered ball with a band around one diameter from the molding tool. Our balls and spheres withstand a Crush Test of up to 70% reduction where competitor products crack.

Pure Tungsten Spheres & Orbs

We also supply pure tungsten spheres and tungsten orbs, polished or as-ground, for collectors, educators, and density demonstrations. At 19.25 g/cc a pure tungsten sphere is strikingly heavy for its size. Pure tungsten and tungsten-alloy spheres are available by diameter; request a quote for pricing.

Tungsten Ball & Sphere FAQs

How much does a tungsten ball weigh?

A 1-inch pure tungsten ball weighs about 165 grams; weight scales with the cube of the diameter at 19.25 g/cc.

What is the difference between a tungsten ball and a tungsten sphere?

A tungsten ball is a fully ground sphere; a tungsten sphere is a sintered ball with a faint band around one diameter from the molding tool.

What is the lead time for custom tungsten ball diameters?

Lead time depends on diameter, grade, tolerance, and quantity. Contact us with your specifications for a current lead-time estimate.

Can you supply DFARS-compliant tungsten balls?

Yes. Material can be certified to DFARS 252.225-7052 on a per-program basis (effective January 1, 2027). Specify your program requirements when you request a quote.
